MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – A natural gas plant and multiple solar generation facilities could be coming to Monongalia County.

Friday the Public Service Commission of West Virginia received an application from the Monongahela Power Company and Potomac Edison seeking approval to construct and operate a 1,200 megawatt combined cycle natural gas plant, along with three 70 megawatt solar generation facilities.

This proposed gas facility would be located at the existing Fort Martin Power Station. The solar projects would be developed at the Wylie Ridge site in Weirton, the Davis site in Davis, and the Valley Point site near Albright.

Cost of this project would be $2.84 billion if approved and construction is estimated to generate approximately $258.5 million in tax revenue.

According to the filing, companies state the combined projects are intended to address energy deficits and reduce potential capacity shortfalls while supporting reliable electric service.
