The short version

The Montréal Canadiens won 5–4 against Pittsburgh on October 31 at Bell Centre, with Josh Anderson's three points helping them hold off Sidney Crosby's late goal.

Montréal holds on at home

Josh Anderson scored twice and assisted on another goal as the Montréal Canadiens defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5–4 at Bell Centre on Saturday, October 31. Montréal extended its winning streak to five games, according to the NHL game recap and the Canadiens' official report. Jacob Fowler made 25 saves for his seventh consecutive victory, and Chris Kreider contributed a goal and an assist. It was not a comfortable finish: the Penguins cut the deficit to one goal late in the third period.

An eventful scoring night

Pittsburgh opened the scoring through Erik Karlsson on a power play. Montréal's Oliver Kapanen quickly replied, and Anderson put the Canadiens ahead before Tommy Novak tied it 2–2. In the second period Alexandre Texier and Kreider scored for Montréal, while Rickard Rakell answered for Pittsburgh. Anderson added his second goal in the third to make it 5–3. Sidney Crosby scored with 3:11 remaining to narrow the margin to 5–4, but Montréal preserved the lead.

Milestones beyond the score

The NHL reported that Crosby reached 1,771 career points, drawing level with Marcel Dionne for sixth place on the all-time list. Fowler's goaltending streak was also notable for a Canadiens rookie, while the club's overall point streak reached seven games. Montréal's result was one of four Canadian-team NHL finals already confirmed Saturday alongside Toronto's win in Vancouver, Ottawa's win in San Jose and Edmonton's shutout of the Islanders. Calgary's late game was not finished at the time of this reporting.
