November 6 Reuters Enbridge carbon capture interest and earnings, with distinctions between proposal, company interest and approved build.
A potential pipeline partner emerges
Canada's Enbridge said November 6 that it is interested in constructing the carbon dioxide transportation pipeline for the proposed Pathways oil sands carbon-capture project in Alberta, provided commercial risks are appropriately shared. Reuters reported an Enbridge executive made the comments on the company's earnings call. The planned project would involve about 650 kilometres of CO₂ pipeline connecting oil sands production sites with a geological storage hub near Cold Lake. Enbridge's stated interest is not a signed contract, financing approval or start of construction.
Industry and governments are still negotiating
The proposed Pathways consortium involves five major oil sands producers, which are negotiating with Alberta and Ottawa on carbon pricing, financial assistance and permitting. The project is intended to capture around six million tonnes of carbon dioxide, but the consortium is only targeting a final investment decision in late 2027. Capture targets are not verified emissions reductions. Researchers and affected communities will need reliable monitoring and safety details before assessing long-term outcomes.
Enbridge's financial context
Enbridge also reported quarterly profit of about C$1.29 billion, nearly twice the C$682 million reported a year earlier, aided by gas infrastructure demand and utility rates. Adjusted earnings in its liquids-pipeline business declined 4.4% because of volume pressures. Those financial details may influence how it prices risk and capital. The policy debate includes possible economic benefits and concerns about continued oil production, public funding and environmental performance. CDN News will treat any future regulatory decision as a new event.
