The short version

AP reports a history-making Georgia gubernatorial result in the 2026 U.S. midterms and the policy issues still facing the incoming governor.

Georgia selects a new governor

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Georgia's November 3, 2026 gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history, the Associated Press reported. Bottoms was previously mayor of Atlanta and will succeed term-limited Republican Governor Brian Kemp. Her win is the first Democratic victory for Georgia governor since 1998, another important state-level change during a night of Democratic gains nationally.

The two candidates' campaigns

Jackson, a businessman and billionaire, invested more than $200 million of his own wealth into the race, according to AP. Bottoms campaigned on the cost of living, public services and plans to address state healthcare and education policies. Jackson emphasized conservative economic policies, spending restraint and private-sector experience. Bottoms told supporters she would govern for the entire state, including those who voted against her. Jackson conceded after results became clear.

A state with divided institutions

Georgia's new governor will need to work with a state legislature where Republicans may retain control of at least one chamber. Campaign promises do not automatically become law, particularly where the other party controls legislative committees or budgets. The office has significant executive authority over state administration, appointments and vetoes, but not unlimited capacity to implement contested laws.

A busy night in Georgia

Georgia also re-elected Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff to the U.S. Senate, according to AP projections. The senator's victory was a Democratic hold, while the governorship was a party flip. These different results illustrate why political coverage must track each office separately. The governor race is called by AP, although state certification follows the applicable legal process.
