Ontario's November 2 decision places the Fenn-Gib gold development near Timmins under One Project, One Process, with expected C$450 million investment.
A fourth Ontario major project joins the fast-track process
Ontario announced November 2 that Mayfair Gold's Fenn-Gib project near Timmins has been designated under the One Project, One Process framework. The province says the framework coordinates provincial approvals and Indigenous consultation through a single point of contact, with the objective of reducing duplicative review and delays. Fenn-Gib is the fourth project selected since the program launched the previous autumn. A designation is not the same as final regulatory approval, completion of consultation or a decision by the developer to begin construction.
Jobs and economic benefits are projections
The provincial government and Mayfair Gold say the proposed project could involve approximately C$450 million in development capital, 450 construction jobs and 250 long-term operating positions. Officials estimate a contribution of about C$3 billion to Ontario's GDP over the project's life. These numbers are forecasts from the project proponent and government, rather than jobs already created or realized GDP. Mayfair expects to secure approvals needed for a construction decision as early as 2028, with commercial production potentially beginning in 2030 if development proceeds.
Indigenous engagement and permits remain necessary
The provincial framework is intended to coordinate the regulatory process, not remove the Crown's duty to consult or the project's environmental obligations. The company is engaged with nearby Indigenous communities and describes its efforts to reach appropriate agreements. Any timeline can change because of technical studies, financing, consultation, approvals and commodity-market conditions. Mayfair's development-stage gold resource and mine-plan forecasts should not be confused with gold already produced or sold.
The local economic question
The project lies in northeastern Ontario in the Timmins–Matheson area, where mining proposals can provide jobs and infrastructure opportunities but also generate legitimate questions about environmental review and community benefits. Whether promised outcomes are realized will depend on completed assessments, agreements, financing and mine operations. CDN News is using Ontario's November 2 notice and Mayfair's dated release as evidence of the designation, not reporting the planned mine as already open.
