Ottawa responds to a first-period tie

The Ottawa Senators defeated the San Jose Sharks 5–1 at SAP Center on Saturday, October 31. Tim Stützle, Dylan Cozens and Shane Pinto each recorded a goal and an assist, while Samuel Ersson earned his first win with Ottawa. The Senators entered the game following two consecutive defeats but broke it open with four straight goals after the Sharks had tied the score in the opening period.

How the Senators pulled away

Cozens opened the scoring midway through the first, only for San Jose's Michael Misa to tie it less than three minutes later. Drake Batherson restored Ottawa's lead at 5:04 of the second period and Stützle doubled the advantage later in the frame. Ridly Greig scored short-handed to make it 4–1. Pinto then added an empty-net goal in the third for the 5–1 final. Jake Sanderson contributed two assists.

Why the result matters

Batherson extended his point streak to seven games, according to the NHL's official game report. Ottawa improved to 9-5-1 and remained on a five-game western road trip. San Jose fell to 7-7-1 after losing three of its previous four. The score and scoring sequence were checked against NHL game reporting; the story does not imply CDN News had a reporter at the arena.
