Prime Minister Mark Carney called six federal by-elections on November 1, and Elections Canada opened the election period with key voting dates and rules.
Six seats will be decided December 7
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday, November 1, that six federal by-elections will take place Monday, December 7, 2026. Elections Canada independently confirmed the start of the contests in Brantford—Brant South and Scarborough North in Ontario; Laurier—Sainte-Marie, Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie and Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot—Acton in Quebec; and Yorkton—Melville in Saskatchewan. The announcement establishes the voting date and districts. It does not determine which party will win any of the six seats, or establish a national general election.
Key voter dates and eligibility
Elections Canada's November 1 notice sets advance polling for Friday, November 27 through Monday, November 30. Applications to vote by special ballot, including by mail, must reach the agency by 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, subject to its stated return deadlines. Eligible voters must be Canadian citizens at least 18 on December 7 and meet the residency rules for one of the six electoral districts. The agency says voters can register or update their information online, at an elections office or, where eligible, at the polling station. Precise polling locations and opening times should be checked through Elections Canada's official service, not guessed from the riding's name.
Why these are separate from municipal and provincial elections
These are federal House of Commons vacancies, unrelated to the October 2026 municipal and provincial votes covered elsewhere by CDN News. In federal by-elections only the eligible voters in the named districts choose a new MP. Elections Canada says it will open local offices and recruit election workers. Its official notice is the authoritative source for registration, advance polls, voting by mail and accessibility information; any candidate announcements or polling claims would require separate verification.
