The proposed 240,000-square-foot Ballantrae facility would host year-round recreation and competitions, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
Federal support for a large indoor venue
The federal government announced on October 30 that it will contribute up to $8.75 million toward the proposed Ballantrae Multi Sport Complex in Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario. The project is planned as a 240,000-square-foot domed facility for year-round recreation, training and community gatherings. The contribution is part of the Build Communities Strong Fund and remains subject to a contribution agreement and applicable conditions.
What is planned inside
The proposal includes a full-sized soccer turf field, basketball and volleyball courts, pickleball and padel facilities, a 400-metre indoor walking and running track, batting cages, classrooms, fitness areas and spaces for community events. Organizers also envisage sport-medicine services and rooms for learning activities. The facility is intended to accommodate local programs and potentially larger tournaments, but no future event schedule has been confirmed by this funding announcement.
Construction timing and access
According to the federal release, construction is expected to begin in 2027 and take approximately eight to ten months. The government says the design is intended to support accessible participation by children, seniors, families, newcomers and people with disabilities. The town previously announced a partnership with Mentana Group in 2025. Project delivery, accessibility features and operating costs will need to be assessed as detailed plans and contracts become public.
Why it matters for local sport
Indoor facilities can reduce weather-related cancellations and expand access to activities during winter, especially for community leagues and training programs. But the scale of public benefit will depend on scheduling, affordability and how much space is reserved for local users rather than private events. The October 30 announcement establishes federal support and a proposed scope, not an opened or operating sports centre.
