The short version

November 4 election-results report for Canadian readers: Democrats have captured control of both chambers of Congress; remaining race counts and certification are separate.

Both chambers change hands

Democrats won control of the United States House of Representatives and Senate in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, according to the Associated Press and Reuters, marking a major change in the balance of power halfway through President Donald Trump's second term. Republican congressional majorities were defeated as Democrats won competitive seats across the country, including some districts the president carried in 2024. AP reported more than two dozen House flips and at least seven Republican-held Senate seats changing parties. The majorities are news-service projections based on counts and analysis, with some individual races still being counted or awaiting state certification.

Senate gains stretch beyond swing states

The Associated Press reported Democratic Senate pickups in North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Maine and South Carolina, while the party defended its seats in Georgia and Michigan. The victories included James Talarico defeating Republican Ken Paxton in Texas; Adam Hamilton defeating Roger Marshall in Kansas; and Troy Jackson defeating Susan Collins in Maine. Roy Cooper also won the Republican-held open seat in North Carolina. Not every Senate race was resolved at the same time: AP said Alaska remained outstanding, for example. The overall majority projection does not imply that every state's final count was certified.

The House will have different leadership

Democrats also reached the 218 seats required for a majority in the 435-seat House. That changes who controls committees, legislative scheduling, House oversight and spending priorities. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is widely expected to seek the speakership when the new Congress convenes, but the speaker is formally chosen by House members. Both chambers passing a bill still would not, by itself, guarantee it becomes law: President Trump retains veto power, and legislative negotiations remain necessary.

Why Canadians should follow the next steps

Canada's exposure to U.S. tariffs, border rules, defence cooperation and trade legislation gives the congressional shift direct importance for Ottawa and Canadian businesses. A new congressional majority can pursue investigations, oversight and legislation, but does not automatically repeal existing duties or rewrite bilateral trade agreements. This report is a dated November 4 results summary, not an automatic ticker. CDN News distinguishes projected congressional control from outstanding seat-level counts and will use credited photographs rather than pretend archive images depict election night.
