Iga Swiatek and Eva Lys will play a second match Down Under in as many years, when Poland takes on Germany at the 2026 United Cup.
Swiatek, who had taken the duo’s last meeting (at the Australian Open last year) for the loss of just one game, comes into the new season looking to recapture the World No. 1 position. The team competition has been a mainstay in her calendar for some time now, and with Poland reaching two finals, she has had considerable success at the venue.
The Pole lifted one Grand Slam trophy, Wimbledon in 2025, and had a mixed year considering her lofty standards. The Australian Open is the only Slam where she has not yet made the final and she will be keen on finding her form in the lead-up tournaments.
Lys, meanwhile, is a completely different player from what she was during the 6-0, 6-1 drubbing that she faced against Swiatek last year. After her breakthrough in Melbourne, where she reached the fourth round as a lucky loser, she has taken giant strides towards the top tier.
A run to the quarterfinals at the WTA1000 event in Shanghai, where she scored her first top-10 win against Elena Rybakina, was her other standout results, helping her reach a career-high ranking of No. 39.

Both Iga Swiatek and Eva Lys possess similar styles of play, built around solid groundstrokes and their smooth movement across the court.
Swiatek holds a good record at the United Cup, having helped Poland reach two finals. Up against a player she has beaten thrice in as many meetings, she should be feeling confident about her first match of 2026.
That said, the Pole will need to be wary of a vastly improved Lys. The German is much more comfortable playing on the big stage now and will not hold back on her shots. She likes to take the ball early and will have to stick to that game plan in hopes of taking time away from her opponent.
Unfortunately for Lys though, she does not possess that standout weapon needed to push someone with Swiatek’s defensive capabilities. To win this match, she will have to be at her best in every department and that could be a tough ask this early in the season.
