Why most agents reset the wrong way
A client of mine — a real estate agent with 26 years in the business — just had her biggest year ever in 2025. Doubled her income. Doubled her production.
And on Dec. 31st, she looked at me and said, “It’s time to start all over again.”
At first, I thought, that’s the mindset of a pro. She gets it. New year. New scoreboard. No coasting.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized her words — or maybe the weight behind them — sounded heavy. As if she had climbed a mountain, planted the flag and now had to walk all the way back down just to start again. Like nothing she did last year mattered anymore.
And I get it. January can feel like that.
All of us, agents, brokers, entrepreneurs, wake up on Jan. 1 with the same pressure: Can I do it again? Can I go even bigger? Do I have it in me to climb another mountain?
And for a lot of people, the answer — even if they don’t say it out loud — is, “I don’t know.”
Why most people burn out before they even begin
This time of year isn’t hard because of laziness. It’s hard because of fatigue.
We’ve been running. Grinding. Producing. Chasing. Managing. Leading. Fighting to stay visible, relevant, and on top of our game.
And now we’re supposed to do it again?
According to a 2023 study by the fitness app Strava, “Quitter’s Day” falls on the second Friday of January — that’s when most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. Roughly 80 per cent of people fall off by then. By the time we hit February? Only 8 per cent of people are still on track.
Not because they don’t want it. But because they’re already running on empty.
This is especially true for business owners. The pressure is real. The scorecard resets to zero. And your brain starts spiralling:
- Where’s my next deal coming from?
- Can I outperform last year?
- How do I fill the pipeline again when I’m already exhausted?
The truth? It’s not just the market that’s heavy, it’s the mental load of starting over.
You don’t need more motivation — you need a system
Motivation is a scam. It’s temporary. It’s emotional. And it disappears the second things get inconvenient.
What you need is momentum — and that only happens when you stop relying on hype and start building real systems.
You’ve heard me say it before: Most agents aren’t struggling because they don’t know what to do. They’re struggling because they simply don’t do it.
The agents who win consistently, year after year, don’t rely on being “inspired.” They have structure. They know their numbers. They track their daily activities. And they don’t drift.
Here’s the danger of drifting: If a plane veers off course by just one degree, it ends up 60 km off target for every 100 km flown. You won’t notice it in the first 10 minutes, but over time, you’ll be completely lost.
That’s exactly what happens to most agents in January.
They start the year with good intentions, but no system. They don’t audit the past year. They don’t break down their goals. They don’t time-block or track anything. So by the end of Q1, they’re already off course and wondering why their pipeline is dry.
Pipeline panic is real — and you’re not alone
It is what it is: pipeline is the number one concern for every serious agent.
It doesn’t matter if you’re new or a top producer; we all feel it in January.
That anxious question in the back of your mind: Where are the next deals coming from?
And here’s the thing: the longer you wait to rebuild it, the heavier the pressure gets. Most agents don’t have a market problem. They have a discipline problem.
The best agents in this business know the formula: daily prospecting, consistent follow-up, and disciplined tracking. When you lock in even 90 focused minutes a day, the results add up fast.
According to data we’ve seen across our coaching and industry partners, agents who consistently follow up/prospect every day will generate four to six additional deals per year (sometimes more) just by sticking to the basics. That’s not theory. That’s the power of consistency. And that is a lot of additional money.
Top producers aren’t winging it, they’re running a system. And that system starts with pipeline discipline.
The difference between those who grow and those who flatline? It’s not talent. It’s how they show up when nobody’s watching.
If your pipeline is keeping you up at night, there’s only one fix: time-block, track and follow up as if your business depends on it (because it does).
How to reset without burning out
This is where most people get it wrong. They try to rev themselves up for another grind, another “best year ever.” Wrong approach.
The real move? Build a business that removes pressure, not adds to it. Here’s how:
- Audit your business
Before you do anything new, figure out what worked. Where did your deals come from last year? What marketing paid off? What relationships drove referrals? Cut what didn’t produce. Double down on what did.
- Design your system
Set your yearly goal — then break it down into quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily targets. Don’t just say you want 24 deals this year. Say you need two per month and 10 listing appointments to get there. Then reverse-engineer it.
- Map your time
Use a real planner. Block out prospecting time like it’s sacred. Track your touches, your conversations, your conversions. Don’t guess. Don’t wing it. Document everything.
- Invest in accountability
Hire a coach. Join a group. Get in rooms with people who challenge you and keep you honest. Don’t isolate — proximity is power.
- Protect your energy
Success doesn’t require burnout. But it does require intention. Sleep well. Eat clean. Train your body and feed your brain. The better you feel, the better you perform.
- Find your fire — again
You don’t need a new goal. You need a new reason. Reconnect with why you do this. Find purpose in the process, not just the payoff.
Reset like a pro
You’re not alone in feeling the weight of a new year.
We all feel it.
Even the top producers. Even the coaches. Even me.
But the difference between the pros and the pretenders is simple: The pros prepare for it. The pretenders panic through it.
So yes — the scoreboard is back at zero.
Yes — the pressure is real.
And yes — the next 12 months are yours to win… or waste.
So here’s your moment.
Take a breath.
Reset the system.
And start building your 2026 momentum — now.
