New York estate where Lin-Manuel Miranda got married for sale
A Hudson Valley estate home to a Gilded Age mansion — and Hollywood history — has hit the market for $9.5 million.
Belvedere Mansion at Pawling Manor is also where “Hamilton” titan Lin-Manuel Miranda got married to Vanessa Nadal back in 2010 — and it’s where iconic silver screen stars, like Elizabeth Taylor, stayed back in the day.
The estate, an inn and special events space, is built on a 6,000-acre royal parcel of land granted to Colonel Henry Pawling in 1696. It currently sits on 9.52 acres, and the grounds include a pond and a tennis court.
The seller is hotelier Andre Balazs and a group of investors.
Balazs made his name with Chateau Marmont in LA, the Mercer in New York, Sunset Beach on Shelter Island and Chiltern Firehouse in London.
He is also the founder of the Standard Hotels brand — its most prominent being the hotel hovering over New York’s High Line — although he left it in 2017.
The estate, near affluent Rhinebeck, features a turn-of-the-century, six-bedroom Georgian mansion that has been restored and modernized. The home was designed by the Beaux Art architecture firm Hoppin and Koen, who designed President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Hyde Park mansion.
Design details include period millwork, grand formal rooms, historic finishes, high ceilings, a double-height entry, restored hardwood floors and two woodburning fireplaces.
All together, there are 22 guest rooms plus three staff rooms across three buildings.
In addition, there’s a separate bungalow structure that formerly housed six guest rooms and is in need of renovation.
By 1959, the property had become a wellness retreat, Pawling Health Manor, founded by Dr. Robert and Joy Gross. Guests included James Earl Jones, Miles Davis and Jerry Stiller.
The Gross’ daughter is Belvedere Mansion’s current listing broker, Wendy Maitland, of Atelier by Wendy Maitland.
The estate also had a regulation boxing ring built by Gross, a former feather-weight boxing champion, and it was used by legendary trainer Cus D’Amato, who trained fighters including the late Floyd Patterson, and Mike Tyson.
