Applications opened October 30 for a $750-million federal program intended to expand Canadian year-round fruit and vegetable production. The funding was announced in June; the new development is the launch of the program and its application window.
Applications open for two funding streams
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada opened applications on October 30, 2026, for its Controlled Environment Agriculture Growth Pathway Program, allocating $750 million to support Canadian growers and communities producing fresh food throughout the year. The launch puts application rules behind a commitment that was already part of Ottawa's $3.2-billion National Food Security Strategy announced in June. It is not a second, newly added $750-million allocation.
Where the money is intended to go
The larger stream, worth $650 million, is intended to help producers adopt or expand greenhouse and other controlled-environment systems, including lighting, robotics, automation and digital growing equipment. Another $100 million is reserved for locally designed food-production initiatives in rural and northern communities. The government says eligible applicants include Canadian producers, businesses, non-profits, Indigenous individuals and communities, and governments. Proposed projects may seek between $100,000 and $10 million, subject to program assessment.
Deadlines and unanswered questions
The initial Project Summary Form window opened at noon Eastern time on October 30 and closes December 23, 2026. Applicants whose proposals fit the program's objectives will be invited to submit full applications. Funding in the technology-adoption stream may be repayable or non-repayable depending on the project; the rural and northern stream uses non-repayable contributions. Ottawa argues that more domestic year-round production could reduce dependence on imported produce, but the announcement does not establish how much additional food will be grown, which projects will win funding or whether grocery prices will fall. Those outcomes depend on project selection and implementation.
