The short version

The federal government launched an application intake on October 29 for organizations that will advise municipalities on zero-emission bus projects.

What was announced

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada announced on October 29 an intake worth up to $15 million for planning and advisory services supporting zero-emission transit deployment. The application window runs through January 14, 2027. The money is aimed at one or more not-for-profit organizations or academic institutions that will support municipalities and transit agencies. It is not a $15-million grant automatically payable to every city or a new fleet-purchase contract.

How advisory support works

Selected organizations are expected to help transit operators evaluate options such as fleet electrification, technology choices, infrastructure needs, charging requirements, workforce readiness, procurement strategy, measurement and training. Planning is particularly important for bus fleets because depot power connections, routes, weather, maintenance facilities and operational schedules can all shape the feasibility and cost of a transition.

Why the government is offering it

The federal release frames cleaner transit as part of emissions reduction and community transportation planning. It notes that transportation accounts for roughly one-quarter of Canada's greenhouse-gas emissions. That national sector figure is not a calculation of the emissions reductions that any single city would achieve from its fleet replacement.

What happens after planning

The government says it intends to open a separate capital intake under the Zero Emission Transit Fund in the coming months. Advisory grants and eventual financing for buses and supporting facilities are different stages. Interested organizations must check the posted eligibility requirements and deadline; announcements alone do not establish that funding has been awarded.
