New Statistics Canada manufacturing-energy data are available for 2025, while 2024 estimates have been finalized following revisions.
What was released
Statistics Canada released results from its Annual Industrial Consumption of Energy Survey for the 2025 reference year on October 28. The new data cover energy consumed by Canada's manufacturing sector, including power used in production, heating, transportation within an establishment and generating steam for on-site consumption. The agency also revised its 2024 information and says that the earlier year's figures are now finalized. The 2025 figures are preliminary and may be revised.
How the survey is constructed
The agency says the 2025 sample included 5,205 manufacturing establishments and produced a weighted response rate of 83.4%. The survey is sponsored by Natural Resources Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada. It estimates consumption by fuel type; the category for electricity includes both purchased and self-generated power, while other categories distinguish natural gas, different petroleum products, coal and additional sources. The release itself does not provide a single headline percentage change for total energy use.
What the figures can and cannot show
Manufacturing energy demand matters for industrial costs, infrastructure planning and Canada's environmental outlook. However, the amount of energy consumed cannot, on its own, determine the sector's greenhouse-gas emissions: the fuel mix, technology and production levels also matter. Detailed comparisons should use the linked statistical tables and reflect the finalized 2024 baseline and revisable 2025 estimates. CDN News has not inferred an increase or decline in total consumption from a release that does not state one.
