Natural Resources Canada announced over $1.2 million for road improvements connected to the Shaakichiuwaanaan lithium project in northern Québec.
Road funding for a critical-minerals project
Natural Resources Canada announced more than $1.2 million on October 28 through its First and Last Mile Fund to support road upgrades serving the Shaakichiuwaanaan mining project in northern Québec's Eeyou Istchee Baie-James region. The project is led by Lithium Innova, a subsidiary of PMET Resources. The proposed work would rehabilitate and upgrade approximately 20 kilometres of an existing access road connecting the Trans-Taiga road to the project. The federal release says the goal is more reliable year-round access for workers, equipment and nearby activities.
Why lithium access matters
Shaakichiuwaanaan contains lithium along with caesium and tantalum resources. Lithium is important for batteries and energy storage; infrastructure can influence whether a remote deposit is economically practical to develop. The government describes the funding as a step toward supply-chain resilience and resource development. That is a policy rationale, not proof that the project has begun producing minerals or has received all approvals needed to operate.
The next milestones
The infrastructure investment is part of a broader fund that the government says is backed by $1.5 billion announced in Budget 2025. The road work and any future mining project have distinct timelines, impacts and regulatory requirements. The next verifiable milestones will be project-level work schedules, applicable permits and updates from the developer and affected communities. No commercial production date was announced in the October 28 release.
