September’s CPI rose 3.1% year over year; excluding gasoline, the increase was 2.2%.
Energy changes the picture
Statistics Canada’s October 23 weekly review reports that the Consumer Price Index increased 3.1% year over year in September, compared with 3.0% in August. Gasoline prices rose 27.8% year over year, following a 22.8% increase in August.
Separate the measures
Excluding gasoline, annual CPI growth slowed to 2.2% from 2.4%. The comparison helps explain why the headline measure can accelerate while a measure excluding one volatile component slows. Neither number is a prediction for the next inflation release.
What this means for reading the news
The reference period is September, although the information was released in October. A national price index also differs from a household’s actual expenses. Readers assessing an energy bill should compare their own consumption, contract and local prices with the index’s broader national picture.
