A reported milestone on VIA Rail's Toronto fleet-maintenance infrastructure based on the corporation's November 2 project-completion announcement.
Toronto facility reopens with major upgrades
VIA Rail Canada says it completed the four-year modernization of its Toronto Maintenance Centre, funded by a C$310-million federal investment. The corporation announced completion on November 2, 2026, and the project received further national coverage this week. According to VIA Rail, construction was delivered on budget and supports maintenance of its new Corridor fleet of 32 bidirectional trainsets while continuing to service existing trains. The completed project is a concrete infrastructure milestone, not a new funding commitment announced on November 4.
How the trains will be maintained
Upgraded facilities include expanded maintenance bays, inspection platforms, tracks for trainsets of up to 10 cars, under-track pits, roof-level work areas and specialized equipment such as a wheel lathe. New yard arrangements are intended to make train movements more efficient. The operator also installed a Vehicle Equipment Measurement System to identify faults and gather diagnostic information earlier, with the goal of reducing unplanned downtime.
Jobs and domestic procurement
VIA Rail reports the construction phase supported up to 475 jobs, more than 80 per cent of project content was Canadian, and the facility is expected to support nearly 240 permanent positions over its operating life. Those figures come from the corporation's project accounting and forecasts; the projected ongoing employment should not be described as newly created full-time jobs already filled. The project forms part of VIA Rail's broader effort to replace and maintain passenger trains.
Why the investment matters
Reliable train maintenance affects service availability, safety and the ability to keep equipment operating in the busy Ontario–Quebec corridor. Whether passengers see fewer delays will need to be evaluated using future operational performance, not inferred solely from construction completion.
